Available for the first time, Mayo Clinic is pleased to offer an online CME course drawing from the expertise of leaders in dermatology. Available in a fully virtual format, topics are available in eleven modules including skin exams, cancers, acneiform disorders, inflammatory skin disease, infections, hair, nails and mucus membranes, cosmetic dermatology, dermatology for skin of color, pediatric dermatology, systemic manifestations, medications, and environmental impacts on skin.
Target Audience
The information presented is relevant to a broad range of non-dermatologists and primary care providers, including general practitioners, internists, physicians, residents, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, APRNs and registered nurses.

Course Faculty
Afsaneh Alavi, M.D., FRCPC
Dr. Alavi is a Professor of Dermatology at Mayo clinic in Rochester Minnesota. Dr. Alavi completed her residency in dermatology in 1998 in Iran, and in 2011 in Toronto, Canada. She also completed a 2-year fellowship in Wound Healing and a Master’s of Science in Community Health at the University of Toronto. Her research interests include wound healing, hidradenitis suppurativa, and complex medical dermatology. Dr. Alavi received multiple awards including the Practitioner of the Year Award from the Canadian Dermatology Association in 2017, the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Award for HSF foundation in 2019, and more recently the supervisor of the year award from Department of Dermatology at Mayo clinic in 2022.
Christal A. Barton, APRN, C.N.P., D.N.P.
Christal Barton is an experienced nurse practitioner who serves as the Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant Supervisor for Mayo Clinic Rochester and Albert Lea Dermatology. She obtained her Doctor of Nursing degree from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Driven by high quality patient care, she takes pride in providing the best patient experience possible. Areas of interest include high risk skin cancer populations, breast dermatology, and community pediatric dermatology.
Jerry D. Brewer, M.D., M.S.
Dr. Jerry Brewer has been a member of the Mayo Clinic staff since 2009, currently serves as the Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship program director and is a Professor of Dermatology. Dr. Brewer’s areas of interest include cutaneous oncology with a focus on melanoma, vein surgery, and hyperhidrosis. Dr. Brewer received the Penfil Award as a 4th year medical student, the Mayo Brothers Distinguished Fellowship Award as a graduating resident and the Karis Award in 2012 by the Saint Mary’s Hospital Sponsorship Board in recognition of exceptional performance in demonstrating Mayo Clinic values. Dr. Brewer has been on various subcommittees of the American Academy of Dermatology, has served as president of the Minnesota Dermatologic Society (MDS) as well as on the board of directors of the international transplant skin cancer collaborative (ITSCC) and the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS), and will begin his term as Secretary/Treasurer of the ACMS May 2023.
Alison J. Bruce, M.B., Ch.B.
Dr. Bruce is a graduate of the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where she received her medical degree cum laude. She completed her dermatology residency training at Mayo Clinic Rochester in 2000, and thereafter practiced as a consultant in that department for 15yrs, before transitioning to the Mayo Clinic Florida campus. Dr. Bruce was the Residency Program Director for 6 years in Rochester, as well as Chair of the Dermatology Hospital Practice. She transitioned to Florida in 2015, at which time she led the creation of the Cosmetic Center, for which she is currently the Co-Director. She developed the Platelet Rich Plasma service line for Dermatology in collaboration with Center for Regenerative Medicine, and now serves as the Chair of the Department of Dermatology. Additionally, she has a particular interest in women’s health, regenerative medicine, as well as aesthetic skin care and rejuvenation.
Katelyn (Kate) M. Camp, P.A.-C., M.S.
Katelyn Camp is a dermatology physician assistant at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Hafsa M. Cantwell, M.D.
Dr. Hafsa Cantwell is an Assistant Professor and Senior Associate Consultant in the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She received her medical degree from the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, then completed dermatology residency at Mayo Clinic, Rochester. Her clinical interests include hospital dermatology, hair loss, aesthetic dermatology, and skin of color.
Dawn Marie R. Davis, M.D.
Dr. Dawn Davis is a Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at Mayo Clinic Rochester. She is the Division Chair of Clinical Dermatology.
Mark Denis P. Davis, M.D.
Dr. Mark Davis is Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota. He is from Ireland and trained in internal medicine in Ireland prior to coming to the Mayo Clinic in 1991 for a residency in Internal Medicine followed by residency in Dermatology.
Dr. Davis has broad clinical and research interests. He has received the Teacher of the Year award in the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic. He is the author of 242 peer-reviewed publications, and 34 book chapters. He edited and coordinated a book detailing the 100-year update of the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic.
Erin R. Dingman, MPAS, P.A.-C.
Erin Dingman is a physician assistant working in the department of dermatology at Mayo Clinic Rochester. She treats a variety of dermatologic conditions and is active in education.
Sion W. Jasmine, M.D.
Dr. Sion Ward Jasmine is originally from New Orleans, LA and attended medical school at LSUHSC New Orleans School of Medicine. Dr. Jasmine completed a dermatology residency at Washington University in Saint Louis and is currently completing a Dermatopathology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic. Academic interests for Dr. Jasmine include the clinical and pathologic correlations of complex medical dermatology and autoimmune connective tissue diseases in patients with darker skin types.
Emma F. Johnson, M.D.
Emma F. Johnson, M.D. is a dermatologist and dermatopathologist in the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She is an Associate Professor in the departments of Dermatology and Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. Her clinical and pathologic interests include granulomatous skin disorders and cutaneous lymphoma. She enjoys teaching clinical dermatology and dermatopathology.
Jenny L. Link, M.D.
Jenny Link, MD completed her medical degree at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in her hometown of Little Rock, AR. She then completed her dermatology residency at The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, where she served as chief resident in her final year. She is a Senior Associate Consultant in the Department of Dermatology here at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where her interests include dermatitis, psoriasis, autoimmune connective tissue disease and bullous dermatoses.
Alexander Meves, M.D., M.B.A.
Alexander Meves, M.D., M.B.A., is a consultant in the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He completed a residency in dermatology and a fellowship in advanced clinical dermatology at Mayo Clinic, which was followed by a 3½-year period of postdoctoral training at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried near Munich in the laboratory of Dr. Reinhard Fässler. His research focuses on the biology of skin cancer and skin aging, specifically as it relates to the remodeling of connective tissue and the extracellular matrix. He also aims to translate basic research into new and innovative methods to diagnose and treat skin cancer.
Nessa Aghazadeh Mohandesi, M.D.
Nessa Aghazadeh Mohandesi is a board-certified dermatologist and a pediatric dermatology fellow at Mayo Clinic.
Desiree M. Morrison, P.A.-C., M.S.
Desiree Morrison is a Certified Physician Assistant in the Dermatology Department at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She has been appointed Instructor of Dermatology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Desiree has a special interest in diagnosing and treating patients with psoriasis and is currently involved in the psoriasis clinic within the Dermatology Department.
Steven A. Nelson, M.D.
Dr. Steven A. Nelson is a Dermatologist based out of the Phoenix, Arizona Mayo Clinic location. Dr. Nelson's interests include Infectious Diseases (Protozoa/Helminths) and Dermatopathology.
Catherine C. Newman, M.D.
Cathy Newman, assistant professor dermatology. Her passions in clinic care are acne and infectious diseases, such as warts. She also has a passion for teaching medical students, residents and advanced practice providers.
Clark C. Otley, M.D.
Dr. Otley is a Consultant in the Mayo Clinic Department of Dermatology and a Professor of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Dr. Otley is widely published in the areas of cutaneous oncology, skin cancer in organ transplant patients and in immunosuppressed populations, and the optimization of perioperative surgical management. Dr. Otley has conducted extensive clinical research with 132 peer-reviewed publications including randomized controlled trials, preclinical studies, and specialty guiding research. He is Past-President of the American College of Mohs Surgeons and is the founding president and on the board of directors of the International Transplant Skin Cancer Collaborative.
Jennifer K. Owen, MPAS, P.A.-C.
Jennifer Owen is a physician assistant in the Department of Dermatology and has been a member of the department since 2018. During her time at Mayo Clinic, she has achieved academic rink as an Instructor in Dermatology. She enjoys general Dermatology and has special interest in Pediatric Dermatology, participating in the Pediatric Dermatology Clinic.
Julio C. Sartori Valinotti, M.D.
Dr. Sartori-Valinotti is an assistant professor of Dermatology and Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine, dermatology and dermatopathology. He serves as the Associate Program Director for the Dermatology Residency Program in Rochester, MN. His clinical interests include teledermatology, hospital dermatology, erythromelalgia, complex medical dermatology and aesthetic dermatology.
Rochelle R. Torgerson, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Torgerson is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Dermatology and Obstetrics and Gynecology, along with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine Rochester. Dr. Torgerson hopes to improve the dermatologic care of women by increasing the understanding of diseases that differently affect the health and well-being of women. Her clinical practice is focused on mucous membrane diseases of the oral cavity and genitalia as well as hair disorders.
Nahid Y. Vidal, M.D.
Nahid Y. Vidal, M.D., FAAD, FACMS, is a Mohs surgeon with subspecialty expertise in skin cancer treatment and complex facial reconstruction. She completed her undergraduate at Stanford University, medical school at University California Davis School of Medicine, Dermatology Residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, and Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology fellowship at Mayo Clinic (Rochester). Dr. Vidal serves as Chair for the Division of the Dermatologic Surgery and participates in national committees for the American College of Mohs Surgery. As the former Director of Resident Dermatologic Surgery Education, she is heavily involved in the education and mentorship of medical students, residents, and fellows. Dr. Vidal is also a principal investigator for several clinical studies pertaining to skin cancer and dermatologic surgery, with special interests including rare and complex cutaneous tumors, immunohistochemistry for Mohs surgery, innovation in education, and artificial intelligence.
Dr. Vidal is a Board-certified Fellow of the American Board of Dermatology, and Board-certified in the subspecialty of Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery.
Erin R. Wahlstedt, P.A.-C., M.S.
Erin Wahlstedt, M.S. is a certified physician assistant. She works at Mayo Clinic Dermatology, Rochester campus.
Molly J. Youssef, M.D.
Dr. Molly Youssef is an Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She completed her medical degree at the University of Minnesota, followed by pediatrics residency at Mayo Clinic. She then completed dermatology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Mayo Clinic, along with pediatric dermatology fellowship. Her clinical interests include pediatric dermatology, atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and oral dermatology.
